In 1995, Union Pacific purchased the Chicago and Northwestern and integrated the operation with its own. Re-painting of the recently acquired locomotives took place slowly, especially for the newer units (like the Dash 9s) whose paint jobs were only 1-2 years old at the time of the merger. Therefore, patched and renumbered CNW locomotives continued to operate on the UP system for many years.

Built in July and August of 1994, this group of 40 units were the only original Dash 9-44CWs ordered by Union Pacific. The units are still on the active roster along with the former CNW and SP units, and are used in all types of mainline service.
